Homemade Valentine Week: You Melt My Heart Crayons

Homemade Valentine Week: You Melt My Heart Crayons

We had so much fun making these homemade heart crayon favors for my kid’s 4th rainbow themed birthday party last year, we decided to make mini versions of the originals for Valentine’s Day.

Here’s my little crayon maker. She gathered up a bowl full of crayons and couldn’t wait to get started making her very own homemade heart crayons.

How beautiful is a pile of colorful crayons?!

We used a mini heart shaped muffin tin like this one, but any regular or mini sized muffin tin will do. My kid had so much fun arranging the colored crayons in each muffin tin, making sure each one got just the right amount of purple.

Into the oven they went and after about 10 to 15 minutes of watching the crayons melting in the window, the beautiful hearts of color were ready to come out and cool.

Now for the instructions…

You Melt My Heart Crayons

Prep Time: 5 minutes Hands on Time: 30 minutes

Supplies:
crayons
muffin tin (we used a heart shaped one)

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
Gather up any crayon pieces you can find (new crayons work, too) and peel off the paper wrappers. If you are using a high quality crayon, like Crayola, put the crayons in a bowl of warm water and within minutes the paper peels will loosen themselves from the crayon. We found cheaper crayons don’t have the same effect in the warm water and can often start melting in the bowl, in your hands…a big mess. Peel those papers off by hand. Break larger crayons into small pieces and fill each mold with crayon pieces. We used a mini heart mold tin but any size or shape tin will work. Put a sheet pan under the crayon filled tin to catch any stray drips. Bake until the crayons melt, about 10-15 minutes. Let them cool completely before removing from the molds. If there are any rough edges, rub the crayons on a piece of paper to smooth out them out.

Crayons, rainbows, and hearts make such a cheerful combination! I'd love to try this sometime, but I'm wondering if it would be safe to bake in the same tins that the crayons were melted in. Would you have any insight on this? This sounds like such a fun activity, though (and I'm not even a kid anymore).

I couldn't find any real research on the topic, but the crayons we used were non-toxic and they came out clean from the molds. I would recommend washing the tins well in warm water and soap and they should be fine for later baking. Another option would be to put some parchment paper down in each tin when you bake. Guess it really comes down to what you feel most comfortable doing. PS. It IS a fun activity!
