Pigs in Puffy Blankets
We decided to make this kid-friendly appetizer for the Superbowl party we were attending this past weekend. When I was a kid I would make them with Pillsbury Crescent Rolls but those are filled with trans-fat which is something I try to avoid these days. I wasn’t sure I was ready to make my own dough so I did a little some label reading and found that Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry sheets do not appear to have any partially hydrogenated oils. The puff pastry worked really well and wasn’t nearly as greasy as I remember the crescent rolls being.
Prep Time: 15 mins Cooking Time: 15 to 20 mins
1 sheet Pepperidge Farm puff pastry
8 kosher regular sized kosher hot dogs (don’t get the jumbos)
flour for dusting
water for sealing
mustard for dipping
Preheat the oven at 400 degrees. Set puff pastry out unfolded to thaw. Meanwhile, cut hot dogs into thirds. Lightly dust the counter top and roll out puff pastry. Use a pizza cutter to cut pastry into thirds lengthwise and then cut into 1 to 1 1/2 size strips horizontally. Strips should be just slightly shorter than the size of your hot dog pieces. Roll one hot dog piece at a time in a pastry strip and pinch to seal at the end. Dip your finger in water to make the seal tight and press gently with a fork to get it to stick. Repeat for all hot dog pieces and place on a cookie sheet for baking. Bake in the oven for approximately 15 minutes or until pastry is puffy and golden brown. Serve hot with mustard for dipping.
My kid was enamored with the fact that we were wrapping the “pigs” in blankets. He kept saying “these are adorable!” He ate several at the party and although this was supposed to be the “kid friendly” app, I think the parents liked it even more… if that’s possible!
PS: We made a batch of these using veggie dogs too. That worked out really well for the vegetarians!
