Super Bowl Crafts: Paper Football

Thanks for making yesterday’s launch of Crafting With My Kid a huge success. As mentioned, we’re embarking on another 365 day project. This time it’s crafts, and this time I have some artsy friends helping me out. I asked my friend Angie (who was a big time art director at a big time agency in Chicago) if she’d come up with some fun ideas for the season. She suggested a few Superbowl themed posts. Brilliant, as ever. Take it away, Angie…

Hi, Angie here. In the midst of trying to come up with some fun Super Bowl craft projects, I suddenly remembered quite possibly the best “restaurant waiting game” that my family used to play: Paper Football, where no extra equipment or batteries were ever needed, just a sugar packet from the condiment container on the table, two hands to make goals and the game was on. Whoever could get that packet through the goal post across the table the most times was the winner. Now, to give this football game a little kid friendly craft makeover, perfect for Super Bowl entertaining…

This is my kid. For her and the rest of our family, football season ended a few weeks ago, when our favorite team yet again missed the chance at a championship. Always a fan of art projects, my kid was so excited to make a super easy, Super Bowl craft even if the colors aren’t EAGLES green.

We grabbed four craft sticks, a couple paint colors and got started painting the sticks. My kid loved painting these. I couldn’t believe how much time and effort she put into each stroke.

After the paint dried, we glued the sticks together in the shape of a football goal post. How about that, football fans, a portable goal post in almost no time! Now for the paper football…

This part was easy crafting too. We cut a strip of brown paper and started folding it like a flag, taking the right bottom corner and folding a triangle upward.

My kid rocked the paper folding part as she continued making triangles upward to the top

and sealed it with a piece of clear tape.

A little cut masking tape for the football laces and even my non-arts and crafts loving husband was ready for “kick off.”

My kid was so proud of her homemade Paper Football game and couldn’t wait to play ball!

Now for the instructions…

Paper Football

Prep Time: 5 minutes Hands on Time: 20 minutes (does not include paint and glue dry time)

Supplies:
craft sticks (4 needed to make one goal post)
paint (any kind of craft paint will do)
paintbrush
glue
brown construction paper
clear tape
masking tape
scissors

Paint four popsicle sticks your favorite team colors. Once the paint dries, arrange the sticks in the shape of a football goal post and glue the sticks together. Let the goal post dry on a flat surface. For the football, take a piece of brown construction paper and fold it in half vertically. Then fold it in half vertically again. When you open the paper folds, you will have four equal strips. Cut one strip to use. Take the bottom right corner of the paper and fold a triangle upward. Continue to fold triangles upward creasing each fold. When the last fold is made, seal the loose flap with a piece of clear tape. Now for the laces, cut a long, thin piece of masking tape and four small horizontal pieces. It’s game time!
