Dove’s 1st Birthday & Baby Naming
Our baby birdie turned one this past week. We threw a combination birthday party / baby naming ceremony extravaganza in our backyard. With a name like Dove it was only fitting that we celebrate the bird of peace. The weather totally cooperated and the baby took a monster nap in the morning. Such a blessing to have a well rested baby on the day of her special blessing. The ceremony started at 3:30 followed by an early supper of fresh Mexican food right off the grill made by one of my favorite taco guys here in town. Check out how much fun we had at her party!
Let’s start with this gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous cake made by a local and amazing baker, Daniel Shapiro, of Modern Bite.
Daniel suggested we serve a buttermilk vanilla cake with salted caramel, cream cheese filling and vanilla butter cream. Um. Yes. You read that right: salted caramel filling! The cake tasted even better than it looked… if that’s possible. The next morning I got this note from my dear friend who attended the party:
If you find me in your kitchen at 8 am and your cake is missing, its because I would have eaten it for breakfast. OMG – so not on my Mexico bikini diet but so freaking delicious and worth it! – Rachel
Not to be outdone, Daniel, outdid himself by making baby Dove her own mini chocolate cake with a little birdie right on top. She had this princess cake all to herself. Thank you, Daniel. Thanks to Modern Bite, I may never attempt to make a birthday cake again. (Lucky for us, Daniel is going to give us a tutorial on how he made this!! Stay tuned.)
Moving on to the decor. I have been obsessing over some super expensive terrariums I saw at Rolling Greens and really wanted to reproduce some for the party. A wonderful woman at the nursery helped me figure it out. She suggested a small figurine. I thought these porcelain doves from Etsy were fitting.
We also made candy cones and filled them with robins eggs. So cute and delicious.
Big brother ran around with his light saber and his green shirt buttoned all the way to the top channeling Yoda.
The ceremony itself was lovely. We’re so lucky to have a community of friends to help us celebrate this momentous occasion.
And even luckier that both sets of grand parents were able to fly in for the special event. (Three generations, grandma, daddy and baby girl!)
More bird themed candy treats for the big kids. Sour gummy worms are always a hit!
Lots of baby holding for the pretty little birthday girl. She was incredibly cooperative!
Pretty Doves hanging from all the trees and trellises in the backyard.
It’s hard to believe she’s already one. Where did the time go?
Happy birthday, baby girl! A sweet day for the sweetest one year old on the planet.

Such a sweet party. ps, I brought home cake and ate it later that night and this morning for breakfast. My mouth is very much looking forward to the tutorial, my waist not so much.
These decorations are so sweet! Seriously perfect. Happy birthday, Dove.
what a gorgeous party! i love the cakes…and all the little birdie touches. looks like you all had a great time!
Who's that guy in the plaid shirt holding the birthday girl? H-O-T. What a fabulous party. My big kid is still talking about the candy cones. He loved finding marshmallows buried inside!
So cute for a super cute birthday girl! Love all the special touches.
Love all of this! Can you do a tutorial on the candy cones?
You bird theme is so clever and perfect – love the little worm favors and the cakes are outstanding, but I also heart those small details like the etsy doves and the doves hanging from the trees – beautiful job and wonderful pictures – an event to remember! And YES – I'd love a tutorial on the candy cones as well!!!
yes! they were so easy to make and the kids loved them. will post soon.
ha ha! me too!
thanks, alyssia. that means a lot coming from you a crafty godess!

Can I hire you to plan Elias' 1st BD party in a few weeks? I was going to throw chicken on the BBQ and have a cooler of beer for the adults, but now I feel deficient.
mmmm! i'd come to that party!
what a beautiful party and little girl! thanks for sharing.
