DIY Snowflakes

Growing up in the Midwest I lived for snow days where it was too cold to walk to school but not too cold to run outside, make snow angels, snowmen and snowballs. Sure, my L.A. kid loves the idea of winter and the sweet taste of hot chocolate, but will she really ever know a long afternoon of playing outside in the wonderful, white piles of snow? In an attempt to appreciate the winter months, we got crafting on snowflakes. These yarn snowflakes are so beautiful and fun to create, not exactly the real deal but snowflakes nonetheless. I’m not even going to lie to you: my kid was too young for this project, but I loved it. About 5 minutes in, she (4.5 yrs old) decided she was done. Perhaps it was too much yarn wrapping or maybe the 70 degree day was calling her outside to play.

All in all, if your hands and attention span are bigger than a four-and-a-half-year-old, glue three crafts sticks together in the shape of a snowflake. Once it dries, begin wrapping yarn across and around in-between each stick. You are now creating a nice fluffy center.

Now for the supporting “snow flakiness,” wrap the yarn a couple times around one stick. Then move on to each stick after, following the same process wrapping around and around. Next, let your own creativity flow and continue to wrap the yarn around each stick and/or back and forth across the sticks.

The coolest part about this winter craft project is there is no right or wrong on how to wrap the yarn. Each snowflake can be as individual as the real thing.
