Recycled Napkin Rings

Recycled Napkin Rings

Around dinner time, every night, my kid insists on helping get the dinner table ready. She loves to carry the plates and utensils over and set things just the way she likes them. Her most favorite part, though, is getting the napkins, probably because we have a drawer full of some pretty fun leftover party ones. Who wouldn’t love sitting down to polkadots, monsters, princesses, and a rainbow of colors?! I knew my kid would have a great time making this very kid-friendly and easy napkin ring craft, ideal to spice up dinner time, anytime.

I have quickly realized that toilet paper rolls are full of endless crafting possibilities! We began by cutting our roll into 1 1/2-inch long pieces and then covered the pieces with electrical (or artist) tape. Any kind of colored tape would work or use whatever materials you have in the house. This project is really about using what you have around.

My kid added another layer of stripes and decided her napkin ring needed a little floral touch.

Pretty cute, right?

While the glue dried on her flower, my kid cranked out 3 more napkin rings covered in different colored tapes and could not wait to stuff her napkins through. The funniest was she wouldn’t even take her napkin out of the ring at dinner time. She thought it was way more fun to look at the whole napkin meets napkin ring package at dinner and dab her face when needed. Lucky for us, we weren’t having a saucy mess of a meal and nothing landed in her empty lap! Now for the instructions…

Recycled Napkin Rings

Prep Time: 5 minutes   Hands on Time: 25 minutes

Supplies:
Toilet Paper Rolls or Paper Towel Roll
Ruler
Scissors
Marker
Electrical Tape (found at hardware store) or Colored Artist Tapes (found at art supply store)
Optional: Anything you have around to embellish your napkin rings ( jewels, buttons, paper flowers, etc.)
Glue to paste down any extra embellishments

Using the ruler, measure out the toilet paper roll 1 1/2 inches long and draw a mark or line. You will cover up whatever marks you make on the roll later, so don’t worry about having a mess. Cut each napkin ring 1 1/2 inches long. Depending on how many napkin rings you wish to make, you will need a few toilet paper rolls or one paper towel roll. Next, select what tape colors you wish to use. Cut strips of tape long enough to loop once around the napkin ring. Place the next piece of tape slightly overlapping or exactly next to the last piece. Repeat looping the tape around the napkin ring until the entire ring is covered in tape and you can no longer see the brown colored roll. We added more colored tape on top of the first layer and created vertical stripes and patterns all around the ring. You can do whatever you or you kid feels like. Add different colored tapes, glue on buttons or paper shapes/flowers, adorn that thing with jewels…the options are endless. Once your glue has dried and the tape is securely in place, you are ready to slide a very lucky napkin through the ring. Suddenly, dinner just got a lot more exciting and your little one will love helping to make that happen!
