Homemade Valentine Week: Fingerprint Hearts

Homemade Valentine Week: Fingerprint Hearts

So my kid got an awesome fingerprint book and ink pad for the holidays. While practicing butterflies and elephants with our fingers and thumbs, it dawned on me how great it would be to make fingerprint hearts, perfect for Valentine’s Day. My kid was totally into it, so we gave it a try.

All you need is some paper, an ink pad (or even a marker will do) and one of these!

My kid is still learning about letters, so I drew some capital “V”s and let her stamp her prints over them. It only took a few tries and then she was hearting all over the practice page.

And away she went, one diagonal fingerprint at a time

We found re-inking your finger often was the key to a really good heart print.

Once my kid got the hang of it, there was no stopping the hearts. We ended up with so many, we’re planning to use them as labels or cards for Valentine’s Day, so much more personal than a store bought card!

Now for the instructions…

Fingerprint Hearts

Prep Time: 5 minutes Hands on Time: 25 minutes

Supplies:
paper (we used a medium to heavyweight cardstock)
ruler
scissors
ink pad (we used washable ink)
wet wipe or paper towel to keep those painted fingerprints from getting all over the house

Using a piece of paper and ruler, measure out your desired size card(s). We made little 2×3 sized label cards and were able to get a big stack of them from just one piece of paper. Next, you’ll need a red or pink ink pad (or markers). Clean off your index finger and you are ready to fingerprint.  Stamp a big “V” with just 2 fingerprints (one at a time) or turn your paper diagonally as you stamp one way and then the other. In front of you should be a beautiful homemade heart. Make sure to cover your finger well with the ink before sticking it on the paper. We found always reapplying ink before stamping was the best way to get bold color.

I'm glad I stumbled onto your site. I love the "v" idea for teaching the hearts. My girlie is 2 1/2 and we made cards this year and I plan to keep it up in future years.. I love your ideas!!!
