Home Baked Holidays: Pumpkin Apple Pup Cakes

Home Baked Holidays: Pumpkin Apple Pup Cakes

This one is for the dogs. Quite literally. We simply could not let the holidays go by without making something for our favorite pup so we baked up a batch of Pumpkin Apple Doggie Cup Cakes. We used whole grains and baked them without sugar or baking powder.

It’s as if she knew we were baking for her – she was licking her lips the entire time. My kid got such a kick out of this idea that I let him frost and decorate them all by himself. Then he sat on the floor with our pup (who is hardly a pup) and presented her with a Pup Cake. I love how she’s keeping her eyes on the prize.

Do you see the “frosting” on her whiskers? She ate it in about 5 seconds flat and licked her lips for the next 5 minutes.

I think my kid did a pretty good job frosting them and adorning each with a mini treat. I can’t wait to give some of these to our furry friends in the neighborhood. Now for the recipe…

Pumpkin Apple Pup Cakes (Dog Cup Cake Recipe)

Prep Time: 10 mins  Cooking Time: 25 to 30 mins

Ingredients:
1 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce
1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie – just plain pumpkin!)
1 medium apple (peeled + diced small)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
3 eggs lightly beaten
1 package cream cheese
2 to 3 tablespoons apple sauces
small treats for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place oats in a mini prep food processor and pulse up until finely ground. (You can use whole oats if you don’t have a food processor.) Mix ground oats, cinnamon and flour together. In another bowl mixed together pumpkin, apple sauce, eggs and apple together. Combine wet and dry ingredients and scoop into a greased muffin tin. Pile them up high (all the way to the top of tin) because they will not rise. They are dense! Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack to dry out over night. (They may be a little wet on the bottom. That’s ok, they’ll be dry by morning.)  To prepare frosting, beat together cream cheese and 2 to 3 tablespoons apple sauce until smooth. Spread frosting on each pup cake and garnish with treat. Makes about 6 doggie cup cakes.

Cute idea. Looking at the recipe I see no reason why people (like ME!) couldn't eat these cupcakes…they sound really good!

There's nothing in it you couldn't eat but they are incredibly dense since there's no baking powder and no baking soda. Definitely filled with good wholesome stuff but not the best tasting human cupcake. That's for sure!

I just wanted to say I made these for a bake sale when I wanted to find an alternative to the regular cupcakes and cookies. I also have 3 over grown puppies at home who LOVED them!!!

Although since it’s April I could not find pumpkin puree anywhere. I only found pie mix at one store and I went to 4!! So I decided to wing it and found in our organic section a pouch of pumpkin-banana baby food!! I got two pouches and it was the perfect amount!! I also left out the apple chunks an for the frosting I chopped up milkbones and dipped the frosted cupcake into them.

Let’s just say in two days they were gone!! I also had a request to make more!! I greatly appreciated a recipe that was not full of sugar and other undesired things for the pups!!
