Home Baked Holidays: Nuts 4 Candied Pecans

My kid is nuts for nuts. Cashews, almonds, peanuts. You name it! But his favorite are pecans. Admittedly, I’m pretty nuts for nuts too. I’m not sure if it’s New York City nostalgia or the taste, but I’m especially fond of sugared nuts.

For this Home Baked Holiday gift idea, I set out to recreate New York City’s famous Nuts 4 Nuts. Have you ever had the pleasure of eating them on a cold winter day? They are sold by street vendors and they warm the brisk air with their amazinglyly sweet and nutty scent. Mmmmmm.

Fifteen minutes into baking I was dutifully washing the dishes half scowling at the fact that when we cook we have to clean up, but just as that thought crossed my mind into my nostrils danced the smell of nutty cinnamon and sugar baking in my oven. Divine!

We let the nuts cool all the way down then in the morning we slipped them into adorable round tins we picked up at The Container Store [1]. My kid had so much fun sneaking pecans while he customized the labels. So cute!

You can download my labels for FREE here [2]. You can either print them on sticker paper or glossy paper and use double sided tape. Either way they’ll look adorable! Now for the recipe…

Nuts 4 Candied Pecans Recipe

Prep Time: 5 mins  Cooking Time: 1 hour
adapted from All Recipes.com

Ingredients:
2 large egg whites
1 tablespoon water
1 pound shelled pecans
1 cup extra fine bakers sugar / sometimes called caster sugar (near the granulated sugar at the market)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg whites and water until frothy. In a gallon sized Ziploc bag, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour egg whites in a separate gallon Ziploc and add pecans. Shake vigorously until coated. Transfer pecans to bag with cinnamon sugar and shake to coat nuts evenly. Spread the nuts out on a well greased baking sheet (we used a Silpat) and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes to roast evenly.
