Countdown to 2011: Edible Party Horns
Two days before Christmas my phone rang “Are you ready for the Glazer bomb?” the voice on the other end asked. It was my dearest friend, Rachel Glazer, who’d flown in from Boston with her husband and her brood of three. They were just passing through Los Angeles on their way to Palm Springs but had promised to stay with us for two nights.
They arrived just before noon and the kids immediately started playing house. Seriously? Seriously. So much has changed since we were kids, yet so much stays the same. My kid liked acting out the roll of the baby and enjoyed letting Rachel’s eldest (an adorable girl) boss him around.
When they weren’t playing house they were scavenging for food. It was a non-stop finger licking good feeding frenzy, but the absolute highlight was this New Years eve recipe for Edible Party Horns.
It turns out that dipping cones in chocolate and covering them with sprinkles is a deliciously kid-friendly activity. And once the kids bit off the ends, they actually made for pretty good party horns “doo do doo!”
Max did an awesome job of spelling out his name in frosting but simply could not wait to let it dry.
Even the little guy got in on the action. Such a fun and fitting way to celebrate New Year’s Eve with the kiddos. Happy New Year! Now for the recipe…
Edible Party Horns Recipe
adapted from this FamilyFun Recipe
Prep Time: 5 mins Cooking Time: 2 mins
Ingredients:
1 package sugar cones
12 oz bag of chocolate chips
multi-colored non-pareil sprinkles
decorators frosting tubes
Set out sugar cones and sprinkles for assembly. Pour chocolate chips into a microwave safe dish and microwave on 1/2 power for 30 to 45 seconds at a time stirring in between until melted. (Don’t microwave on high, they WILL burn.) Once chocolate is melted, dip the sugar cone in chocolate pointy side down and use a spatula to spread the chocolate evenly around the cone. Sprinkle liberally and set aside to dry for 1/2 hour. Use a round pastry tip to write 2011 on each cone and let dry for at least another 1/2 hour until the chocolate is completely hardened. When it’s time to celebrate, bite off the tip and “doo do doo!” directly into the cone. Eat.
