Stick People Family

We’ve been talking quite a bit about family lately. Family trees, how we’re all related, why one kid might have his mom’s eyes but his dad’s personality. It’s part genealogy and part biology but mostly pretty confusing for a kid.

I’ve found that tactile things make much more sense to a 5 year old, so I bought a pack of these People-Shaped Wood Craft Sticks and we started by designing our own family.

My kid was eager to get in on the action. He started by drawing the baby in a pink dress with purple shoes. After all, pink and purple are girl colors.

The baby got to hold her stick figure while my kid worked on his own likeness. She said “hi” to it as soon as he handed it over. I love that she was saying “hi” to her stick self.

Our little stick family was coming right along when it hit me that these would make for the cutest table seating assignment cards ever. Seriously, how adorable will that be? Now for the instructions…

Prep Time: 5 mins  Hands On Time: 20 mins to 3 hours

Supplies:
1 bag of People-Shaped Wood Craft Sticks
Assorted Markers
Clay (optional)

Start with enough people for your nuclear family. Allow your child to color in each person and then write the name of the person below. Keep making people until you’ve formed the entire bunch! Form a small ball of clay and flatten at the bottom. Push people into clay and use for table seating assignments.

John Kerry came across as Lurch with a New England accent. Just horrible. I can’t think of a presidential candidate in recent history that was more unlikable.
