Savory Sitter: Kid Friendly Croque Madame
Hi, Heather the babysitter here bringing you another babysitter friendly recipe. This one is not only super easy, but quite possibly the cutest Valentine’s recipe ever. Did I mention that it’s incredibly delicious too? I thought it would be fun to make a kid-friendly version of the traditional French sandwich, croque madame. A traditional croque madame is basically a hot grilled ham and cheese sandwich sandwich with a fried egg placed on top. It’s generally eaten with a fork and knife.
This version is so much more kid friendly because we made it with turkey instead of ham and cooked the egg right in the sandwich eliminated the need for a fork and knife. Even after it’s cut in half, the egg stays inside the sandwich for maximum eat-ability! It’s a perfect on pan meal your baby sitter can make for dinner and serve with some fresh cut fruit.
After I cuddled the baby, I made the sandwich and then removed it from the heat to cut the hole out of the center. (We used a heart for Valentine’s day!) Then I returned it to the pan and cracked an egg in the center. Making the egg inside the sandwich was just as yummy as an adult croque madame, and had the added benefit of giving us something to snack on while the egg cooked — the center of the sandwich is pretty great all by itself. Now for the recipe…
Kid Friendly Croque Madame
Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
2 slices whole wheat sandwich bread
1/2 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
1 slice smoked turkey
1 egg
In a non-stick skillet melt butter over medium-low heat and place one slice of bread on top of it. Place cheese on top of bread followed by the slice of turkey and the other piece of bread. Cook on one side until bread is golden brown and cheese is beginning to melt, about 3 minutes. Flip sandwich over in pan and cook until the other side is light golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove sandwich from pan and place on a cutting board. Using a heart-shaped cookie-cutter, cut a small heart out of the center of the sandwich. Return sandwich to the same skillet over medium-high heat and crack the egg into the heart-shaped hole. Let the egg cook for a minute, then reduce heat to medium-low and cover skillet with lid. Let cook, covered for about 5 minutes. When egg has cooked, remove from pan and enjoy!
