Hot Cocoa Cream of Wheat

When I was a kid my dad would forgo brown sugar for a sprinkling of hot cocoa mix on his cream of wheat. Friends who slept over found this fascinating and my mom didn’t think he was setting the best example but even today that’s how he eats it. If we ran out of hot cocoa mix, he’d use Ovaltine instead. While it seems somewhat desserty and un-breakfastlike it actually tastes amazing and isn’t any more sugary than a scoop of brown sugar.

This morning I decided to pass on the tradition and tell my kid all about it. We started with Bob’s cream of wheat because I find it superior  to other brands. Plus, for some reason I really like the old school style packaging.

Since we had mini marshmallows in the cabinet, I decided I’d let my kid put a few on top of the cream of wheat for garnish. This is not a part of my dad “traditional” cream of wheat recipe but it was my kid’s favorite part. (Of course.) Set aside your skepticism and give it a try!

I sent this post to my Dad. How cute is his response?  Now for the recipe…
