Super Bowl Series: Oven Baked Turkey Chili Cheese Dogs

The commercials are my favorite part of Super Bowl Sunday so the last thing I want to do is step away to the kitchen when I could be watching. This year I was determined to find something awesome to make that basically cooks itself. I searched high and low and found this recipe for Oven Hot Dogs. I’d never even heard of oven baked hot dogs let alone tried them, but the post was so convincing that I decided to give it a shot.

Basically, you take everything you’ve ever dreamed of putting on a hot dog and put it on a hot dog. Then you bake it in the oven for 45 minutes. We made our version healthier by using whole wheat buns, turkey hot dogs and turkey chili. It is easy and turned out to be ridiculously delicious. It sort of tastes like some kind of new-fangled hot dog lasagna. This is definitely going on the Super Bowl Recipe list. Oh! and we made a veggie friendly version with veggie dogs and veggie chili. My husband was a fan. Now for the recipe…

Oven Baked Turkey Chili Cheese Dogs

Prep Time: 10 mins  Cooking Time: 45 mins

8 turkey hot dogs (we get uncured) / or 8 veggie dogs
8 whole wheat hot dog buns
1 can turkey chili / or veggie chili
lowfat Mexican cheese
olive oil
1/2 onion, diced (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9×13 pan with aluminum foil. Open each bun and drizzle with olive oil. Fill each bun with turkey dog, ketchup, mustard, relish chili, cheese and top with diced onion. Fit all the prepped dogs into a the lined 9×13 pan. You will have some along the sides. Squish them all in. It’s what makes them taste great. Sprinkle a little extra cheese on top once they are all in the pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the oven for 40 minutes. Take the foil off and bake another 5 minutes. To serve, lift the aluminum foil from the pan and use a spatula to distribute dogs. The dogs will be nice and toasty on top. Eat with lots of napkins or a knife and fork. Serves 8.

Note: only cook the veggie version for 30 mins.
