Savory Sitter: Fruit Boats

Hi! Heather the babysitter here bringing you another babysitter friendly snack. As summer approaches and the weather begins to go from hot to hotter, what we feel like making in the kitchen gets cooler. And nothing is cooler than a pirate ship made out of our favorite fruits! It’s true, when it’s super hot outside, there’s nothing as refreshing and satisfying as ripe, delicious and nutritious fruit.

As a babysitter, we have our hands full and need to keep snack time easy. But especially in the hot months, we don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. These fruit boats are the ideal stay cool snack treat. All you have to do is cut the fruit in to the shapes needed for the boat and the kiddos can go to town assembling them into their own mini pirate ships.

Use a wedge of cantaloupe as the ships base.¬† Then cut watermelon into rectangular sails. Bananas make for the perfect fruity sailor man. You will need to use wooden skewers, broken in half to attach everything together. These ship are so cute you won’t want to eat them. But they’re delicious so you should! The babysitter is the only one allowed to cut the fruit..but assembling the ship is for all ages.

Fruit Boats

Prep Time: 5 minutes

1 ripe cantaloupe
1 small ripe watermelon
1 banana

Cut cantaloupe in half and remove seeds. Cut halves in to 3 to 4 inch wedges. Cut the watermelon in to slices and out of the slices cut two rectangles, one larger than the other. One is for the top sail and one is for the bottom sail. Cut the banana crosswise to make a round slice for the sailor man’s head. Then cut it lengthwise into pieces for the body and arms. Using¬† pieces of wooden skewers, skewer the banana man together and the watermelon sail with the larger sail on the bottom and the smaller on the top.
