Baby Led Weaning On-the-Go

As you know I’m doing Baby Led Weaning with the wee one. Still loving every minute of it, but when it came time to travel I was a little concerned that she’d miss out on fruits and veggies in all those planes, trains and automobiles. (I really didn’t want to start spoon feeding.) Believe it or not, my big kid came up with the idea of taking along his apple squeezers (apple sauce in a pouch) for a baby snack. Genius, kid! She absolutely loved it. So much that we bought a whole bunch of different kinds when we arrived in NY.

What’s great about it is that she knows how to suck it up all by herself. No spoon feeding! After a few squirts into her mouth, she really got the hang of it. Now she even holds the bag, except when I need her to do it for a picture. Then she refuses so that you don’t believe me. Look at her even throwing some ‘tude at the camera. She’s a really sweet baby but I can already tell I’m in for it during the teenage years. This picture was taken at Veselka in on the lower east side. We’re suckers for that place. Have you been?

It’s just down the street from this classic: Moishe’s Bake Shop. The windows are covered in graffiti but you can still peer inside and see piles and piles of baked goods. CASH ONLY! Thankfully, I’d visited the ATM in anticipation.

I only mention it because my little Baby Led Weaner ate one of these delectable hamentashen after lunch. I don’t think these were recommended in the book, but it was so dang precious to see her tiny fingers all covered in sticky raspberry filling. What can I say? I’m not perfect.

PS: I realize that this food is pureed and not 100% in-line with the BLW concept, but I like it because it still allows her to self feed when I’m on-the-go. (Hello! No knives on planes to cut up fruit!)

We called those pouches astronaut food. Very helpful in our babyled weaning journey as well!

I love those pouches! Especially because they have veggie options that are atypical for baby food, like spinach, parsnips, and rutabaga. Babies R Us has the best selection. Also chickpeas (or any bean), sliced olives, cauliflower, and broccoli are great portable snacks that can go a long while without refrigeration, when your peach gets a bit older.
